Rainey and Susan McNulty Rainey) on being named the 1991 Contra Costa ) County American Cancer Society ) Humanitarians of the Year. ) RESOLUTION NO. 91/ 340 WHEREAS, Sheriff and Mrs. Rainey, both longtime residents of Contra Costa County, have, through both individual and joint efforts, served as representatives of Contra Costa County , through many elected and appointed positions, have contributed to many worthwhile charities and organizations and have enhanced Contra Costa County's overall quality of life; and WHEREAS, Susan McNulty Rainey moved to Moraga in 1968 and became active in the community by, among other activities,' serving as both the Moraga Community Association Director and the President of the Moraga Junior Women' s Club, by working on the incorporation of the Town of Moraga and by serving on the Town Council from 1974 to 1980, which included' filling a term as mayor in 1978; and WHEREAS, for the past eleven years, ,Mrs. Susan Rainey has represented the community as a member of the Local Agency Formation Commission, the Urban Land Institute and as a Senior Vice President of Contra Costa Council and, since 1985, Susan has served as a Director of the Central Contra Costa County Sanitary District; and WHEREAS, in 1964, Sheriff Rainey, joined the Contra Costa Sheriff' s Department where he subsequently worked his way up through the ranks and was elected to the office of Sheriff of Contra Costa County in 1978, a position he has held ever since, having been re-elected three times; and WHEREAS, Richard Rainey has served ' on many professional Boards over the years, including his appointment by the 'United States Attorney General to the National Institute of Corrections from 1983 to 1988, his appointment by Governor Deukmejian to the Presley Institute of Correctional Research and Training and his terms as President of both the California Police Officers ' Association .and the California State Sheriffs ' Association; and WHEREAS, as a team for the past five years, Sheriff and Mrs. Rainey have been involved with many charities including the Boy Scouts, the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society's Mardi Gras and Jail and Bail, the Boys and Girls Club Auction, the Micki 'Rainey Scholarship Fund and the Civic Arts and have held over twelve "Murder Mystery Dinners" at their home to benefit these and other charities; and WHEREAS, Sheriff Richard K. Rainey and Susan McNulty Rainey are being honored on June 8, 1991 as the Contra Costa County American Cancer Society' s Humanitarians of the Year. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County CONGRATULATES Sheriff and Mrs. Rainey on being named Humanitarians of the Year, EXTENDS THEIR APPRECIATION for the many activities which Sheriff and Mrs. . Rainey have been involved in which have enhanced the quality of life in Contra Costa County and WISHES them luck in their future endeavors. PASSED AND ADOPTED by unanimous vote of the Board members present on this 4th day of June, 1991.
