SPECIFIC REQUESTS) OR RECOMMENDATIONS) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDATIONS
Authorize chair to sign letter thanking Wente Bros. for their
letter on the Mid-State Tollway alignment in Alameda County and
refer her request to the County of Alameda.
FISCAL IMPACT
None
BACKGROUND/REASONS FOR RECOMMENDATIONS
On June 4, the Transportation Committee reviewed a request from
Carolyn Wente of Wente Brothers Winery to prevent alignment of the
proposed Mid-State Tollway through Livermore's - wine-growing area
(see Exhibit A) . This request was referred to us by the Board on
May 21.
County staff is not aware of any specific alignments proposed by
the project sponsors through Livermore's vineyard area. Such
alignments should be resolved by Alameda County jurisdictions. The
Transportation Committee recommends. that the Wente Bros. request be
referred to the Alameda County Board of Supervisors. A letter
summarizing this recommendation to Ms. Wente is attached for your
consideration (see Exhibit B) .

Dear Supervisor Powers:
I am writing to you regarding the proposed Sunol-Vacaville Toll Road. We
find the possibility of running the Mid-State Tollway through the suggested
alternative route to the south of Livermore, bisecting the South Valley
viticultural region completely unacceptable.
Since 1959, the general plan for the City of Livermore has shown the
realignment of Highway 84 proceeding on the west side of Livermore along
Isabel Avenue. This route continues to emerge as the best solution through
the valley, and one which we support.
The alternative Toll Road route between Sycamore Grove Park and Lake Del
Valle Recreation area would deal a serious blow to the vineyard area, causing
the loss of a tremendous historic and economic asset to Alameda County.
Please use your efforts to prevent the bisecting of the vineyard region. The
only possible route is the approved Highway 84, Isabel Avenue alignment.
No other alternative is acceptable.
Thank you for considering our position on this issue.
incerely,
Caro yn Wente
