RULES AND PROCEDURES FOR A VOLUNTEER PROGRAM
AT BUCHANAN FIELD AIRPORT
The Airport believes that a volunteer tour guide program would be especially helpful to its
community relations program. The reasons for implementing a formal tour program as follows:
1. A tour program will increase public awareness of the Airport's role in the transportation
system and local commerce, and will illustrate the fact the Airport is an asset to the County.
2. A tour program will help educate the community of the functions of the Airport, FAA, and
private pilots. It will also demonstrate the safety checks and balances in place.
3. A tour program will increase the community's involvement in Airport activities. Volunteer
tour guides will conduct the actual tours.
4. The tour program will inform the community of the noise management policies in place.
The Airport Community Relations Officer will solicit volunteers from the retired community,Diablo
Valley College and/or aviation enthusiasts to serve as volunteer tour guides. Volunteers will be
selected according to their desire, reliability, patience, of ability to speak well before large groups.
Volunteers will be required to complete the application form attached to CAO Administrative
Bulletin Number 321. Volunteers will be trained by,the volunteer coordinator and provided with
information relative to airport history, programs, and policies. The volunteer coordinator will meet
with the volunteers on a regular basis to update their knowledge of current airport issues. At this
meeting guides will receive their tour schedules.
Tours will be available to everyone from the first grade level upwards. Group sizes will be limited
to 25. There will be three types of tours. Tour A will be directed toward younger children. It will
focus on teaching the child how to travel on commercial airlines.
Tour B will be directed towards pre and early teens. This tour will consist of a basic introduction
to airports and careers in aviation and a trip to the tower and an FRO.
Tour C is directed to teens through adults. It includes-a history of the airport and a discussion of
the airport facilities. The group will be given an FBO tour and an airfield tour. For special groups,
tower tours also will be available. Scripts have been prepared for the volunteers to follow.
Liability
For children in grade levels one through three, there will be an adult to child ratio of one adult to
ten children. Groups taking the airfield tour may be asked to sign a "hold harmless" agreement.
Only County vehicles will be used on the airfield.
Scheduling
Groups scheduling tours must give a minimum of two weeks notice. The volunteer coordinator will
schedule the tour in its tour logbook. Tours will be scheduled during the morning hours Monday
through Fridays. Some Saturday tours can be accommodated.
Promotion
The airport volunteer coordinator will actively promote its tour program by developing a brochure
describing the tours and distributing it to schools, homeowners groups and special interest
organizations.
Handouts
Two types of handouts will be given to teachers or leaders and group members. Prior to the tour,
the airport will forward a tour brochure and an itinerary of the tour. Also forwarded will be
information and literature such as the Question Corner series, latest newsletters, etc.
Group members will be given promotional paraphernalia such as airline wings, coloring sheets or
other giveaways as donated by airport agencies.
