HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 04021991 - 1.14 BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY IN THE MATTER OF RESOLUTION NO. 91/199 Commending Reverend Julius Pender for a Lifetime of Service to his Fellowman WHEREAS,the Reverend Julius Pender,was born and raised in North Carolina and,upon graduating from high school,joined the Army and was eventually transferred to Camp Stoneman in Pittsburg, California; WHEREAS,then Master Sergeant Pender's staging area was chosen to begin the first integration of black and white troops,sharing barracks,as part of an experiment under the Truman Administration;and WHEREAS,after joining the First Baptist Church in Pittsburg and upon his discharge from the Army in 1947,Julius Pender enrolled at the University of California at Berkeley,graduating in 1951 with a group major which included a Batchelor of Arts in Philosophy and a minor in Psychology and Education;and WHEREAS,Mr.Pender continued his education,receiving a Masters of Theology in 1957 from the American Baptist Seminary of the West;and WHEREAS,after ordination on May 12,1957,Reverend Pender served congregations and organizations in Oakland and Sacramento as well as furthering his education with a Masters of Social Work degree from the University of California at Davis;and WHEREAS,Reverend Pender was called to Pastor the First Baptist Church in Pittsburg in April of 1974 and has served is this position until December of 1990;and WHEREAS, Reverend Pender has been named among the outstanding Pastors in the Baptist Conference and received the Emeritus classification as recognition of his dedication to service and excellent endurance in pastoring his flock;and WHEREAS,during this tenure the Reverend Pender has served on the Concerted Services Board of Directors,the Mayors Youth Employment Committee,the Mental Health Association Board,the Contra Costa County Volunteer Center Board,The Contra Costa County Retarded Adults Board and the Pittsburg Ministerial Association,among others;and WHEREAS,Reverend Pender has received numerous awards,most significantly the Contra Costa County Martin Luther King Award and the Los Medanos Black Student Award for Minorities for 1979; and WHEREAS,since the year 1949,the Reverend Pender has been accompanied and aided by his loving wife Janel and together they have raised two children: Carl Anthony and Valerie Adele; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY,CALIFORNIA,does hereby congratulate and commend the Reverend Julius L.Pender for his many years of contributing to the mental and spiritual well-being of his community as well as his pastorate and does wish him well as he looks forward to the Next Chapter. PASSED by unanimous vote of the Board Members present on this 2nd day of April,1991.
