L9 DATE: April 2j, 19 91 SUBJECT: FUNDING FOR ALEXANDER LINDSAY JUNIOR MUSEUM SPECIFIC REOUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION RECOMMENDATION: Accept the Committee Report on the funding for the Alexander Lindsay Junior Museum and related fish and wildlife matters . BACKGROUND: The Committee discussed the funding allocated to the Alexander Lindsay Junior Museum from the Game Protection Fund on April 8 . Representatives from the museum, the Fish and Wildlife Committee and staff from the Community Development Department were present. Steve Barbata of the Lindsay Museum indicated that his $5,000 request for , funds was reduced to $1,900 as a result of a recent Committee recommendation and Board action. Mr. Barbata indicated that his organization provides a great deal of education programs and 4/ccepts many wild animals from the County' s Animal Control Department. Dan Pellegrini, Chair of the Fish and Wildlife Committee, indicated that revenues to the Game Protection Fund have dwindled since the Sheriff 's Marine Patrol Program was cutback. Moreover, the Committee' s priority is to provide increased habitat through wetlands projects and creek restoration. Committee representatives also questioned the legal uses of monies from the fund and requested an accounting of revenues received and expenditures this year. The Finance Committee requested the following at its next meeting: 1. request the CAO staff to provide an accounting of revenues and expenditures from the fund this year, and determine whether balances in the fund receive interest; 2 . request the County Counsel to provide a legal opinion on the uses of monies from the` fund--specifically those expenditures by the Sheriff.; 3 . invite representatives from the Flood Control District and explore whether the Special District Augmentation Funds can provide financial assistance in restoring, dredging and clearing creeks; 4 . encourage museum staff and Committee representatives to plan and develop . joint projects; and 5 . encourage the Committee to formalize its projects so that financial sponsors can be solicited.
