SUBJECT: FUNDING FOR ALEXANDER LINDSAY JUNIOR MUSEUM
SPECIFIC REOUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDATION:
Accept the Committee Report on the funding for the Alexander
Lindsay Junior Museum and related fish and wildlife matters .
BACKGROUND:
The Committee discussed the funding allocated to the Alexander
Lindsay Junior Museum from the Game Protection Fund on April 8 .
Representatives from the museum, the Fish and Wildlife Committee
and staff from the Community Development Department were present.
Steve Barbata of the Lindsay Museum indicated that his $5,000
request for , funds was reduced to $1,900 as a result of a recent
Committee recommendation and Board action. Mr. Barbata indicated
that his organization provides a great deal of education programs
and 4/ccepts many wild animals from the County' s Animal Control
Department.
Dan Pellegrini, Chair of the Fish and Wildlife Committee,
indicated that revenues to the Game Protection Fund have dwindled
since the Sheriff 's Marine Patrol Program was cutback. Moreover,
the Committee' s priority is to provide increased habitat through
wetlands projects and creek restoration. Committee
representatives also questioned the legal uses of monies from the
fund and requested an accounting of revenues received and
expenditures this year.

The Finance Committee agreed to provide the Committee with the
desired information and elected to explore the Committee's
priority further at its May 13 meeting. The Finance Committee
requested the following at its next meeting:

revenues and expenditures from the fund this year,
and determine whether balances in the fund receive
interest;
2 . request the County Counsel to provide a legal
opinion on the uses of monies from the`
fund--specifically those expenditures by the
Sheriff.;
3 . invite representatives from the Flood Control
District and explore whether the Special District
Augmentation Funds can provide financial
assistance in restoring, dredging and clearing
creeks;
4 . encourage museum staff and Committee
representatives to plan and develop . joint
projects; and
5 . encourage the Committee to formalize its projects
so that financial sponsors can be solicited.
