SOCIAL WORK MONTH in Contra )
Costa County, )
People, as individuals and members of families, are our principal
resource, and the strength of many individuals and families is
challenged by pressures and lack of . resources. . Many of our
citizens live in poverty, are physically or mentally handicapped,
are chemically dependent, are new immigrants, are abused and
neglected as children or aged, are mentally ill, or are struggling
to cope with serious life stresses.
Individual and family dysfunctions take their toll not only on
individuals and families but on society as a whole. The tradi-
tional goal of our nation and of the social work profession is to
enable all our citizens to lead the most productive, satisfying,
and independent lives possible.
Professional. social workers perform an important service by helping
others cope in difficult times and have been actively involved in
the organization of programs to improve and enhance the strength of
individuals and families. Social workers constitute the largest
group of professionals engaged in providing psychosocial
assistance, counseling, and services to the public.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors
-declares March 1991 as PROFESSIONAL SOCIAL WORK MONTH in
recognition of the role professional social workers play in
providing opportunities for a life of accomplishment, dignity, and
purpose and call upon members of the community to join with the
social work: profession in support of appropriate programs,
ceremonies, and activities designed to achieve that goal.
