Suggest April 5th to 7th as an Alcohol Free Weekend For Adults. BACKGROUND The alcohol industry spends millions of dollars annually promoting and informing the public of the benefits of alcohol. In comparison minimal funds are spent informing the public of its dangers. Alcohol_ is the leading cause of death among our youth. An average of 300 people die each day from alcohol related causes. An alcohol related family problem strikes one in every four american homes. Alcohol_ is a contributing factor in many other societal problevis such as child abuse and homicide and cost society 85.8 billion dollars in 1988. The Alcohol Advisory Board and the Health Services Department recommends that the Board of Supervisors join the National Council of Alcohol and Drug Dependency and hundreds of its affiliate groups in proclaiming April Alcohol Awareness month to call attention to the above dangers arising from the abuse of alcohol, and also requests than the Board urge the adults of this County to consider spending the weekend of April 5th - 7th alcohol free in order to ponder the above and to reflect on the role that alcohol has in their lives.
