MICHAEL WALFORD, PUBLIC WORKS DIRECTOR DATE: JULY 10, 1990 SUBJECT: EAGLE FLIGHT PROGRAM SPECIFIC REQUEMS)OR RECONINMNDAMON(S)dt BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION I. Recommended Action: ACCEPT report from the Public Works Director supporting the Eagle Flight Program at Buchanan Field Airport. 111. Financial Impact: None III. Reasons for Recommendations and Background: Eagle Flight is a brand new exciting aviation program. It was designed to assist educators when introducing aviation to their students. Eagle Flight resources can be utilized by educators, grades K-8, even if they do not have experience in technology. It applies to all academic disciplines - not just the sciences, and includes math, writing, reading, science, vocabulary, and social studies. Buchanan Field Airport is actively participating in this innovative Statewide program. Eagle Flight uses the team concept approach to bring aviation resources to the classroom teacher. The Local Eagle Flight team includes Harold Wight, Manager of Airports; Karen Tramontana, Airport Community Relations and Noise Control Officer; Sabre Piggot and Anne Peppier of the Mt. Diablo Chapter, 99s International Women Pilots, Inc.; and Mt. Diablo School District teachers Jim McDonald and Ned Dodds. On May 12, 1990, the Manager of Airports held an Introductory Eagle Flight for the first fifteen teachers who signed up for the full Eagle Flight Workshop which will be held this Fall. Workshop registration information for teachers was circulated through the Mt. Diablo School District mail system. The introduction consisted of a ground tour of the Airport and a flight in an airplane flown by a 99s' member. The ground tour, narrated by the Manager of Airports, was given from the pilots' perspective. The narrative included an explanation of the Airport markings, communications equipment, and air traffic control. Prior to the airplane ride, teachers participated in the pre-flight check, and several were afforded the opportunity to actually pilot the airplane during flight. The flight was sponsored by the 99s. Reasons for Recommendations and Background: (Continued) 0 The first Workshop will be held on October 6, 1990 at the Buchanan Field Airport Sheraton Hotel. At this Workshop, teachers will participate in make-it-and-take-it sessions and will receive lesson plans. These lesson plans will be geared to prepare students for a field trip to the Airport. At the Workshop, teachers will receive pictures, posters, handouts, as well as addresses to obtain other free or inexpensive materials from the numerous participating Eagle Flight organizations. There will also be information on attending other educator conferences, plus much, much, more. Future Eagle Flight Workshops will be held quarterly. The Eagle Flight Team at Buchanan Field has several exciting ideas that they plan to implement during the next school year. The second week in October has been declared Aviation Education Week. During Aviation Education Week, the Team plans to select and recognize a local "Outstanding Aviation Educator of the Year". The teacher nominated would receive aviation- related incentive items donated by Airport Fixed Base Operators and other local businesses. Another plan of the Eagle Flight Team is to solicit and train volunteer Airport tour guides. These tour guides will have some aviation knowledge and be from the local community. If the enthusiasm displayed by the group on May 12 is any indication of what can be expected at future Eagle Flight Workshops, this program will be a huge success. Workshop graduates will be able to build their own teams with colleagues in their schools or with Buchanan Field Airport, using Eagle Flight Resources. These resources include the California Department of Transportation; Federal Aviation Administration; NASA-Ames Research Center; 99s International Women Pilots, Inc; California Association of Airport Executives, and others. The Buchanan Field Airport Eagle Flight Team urges the Board of Supervisors to support this effort.
