MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH PROGRAM
The Public Health Nutritionist plans , develops and evaluates the
perinatal nutrition service component of Contra Costa County' s
Comprehensive Perinatal Services Program (CPSP). CPSP activities are
the responsibility of the Maternal and Child Health Program, Public
Health Division . The Public Health Nutritionist acts as the
consultant for perinatal nutrition services to the MCH Program
Coordinator and all approved and potential CPSP providers.
The Public Health Nutritionist carries out the following
responsibilities :
1 . C.P. S .P. RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT: (1%)
Cultivation of potential providers , practitioners , and resources
A. Consult with local health care providers and agencies
regarding local nutrition needs and resource development
for low income pregnant women ;
B. Evaluate and monitor the availability of perinatal
nutrition service resources within the local com unity ;
C. Respond to concerns and questions of medical professionals
regarding CPSP perinatal nutrition issues ;
D. Identify perinatal nutrition support service
practitioners ;
E. Assess the adequacy of potential providers to provide safe
and appropriate perinatal nutrition care;
F. Plan and provide orientation to provider ( sl ) staff regarding
Comprehensive Perinatal Services Program assessment
and intervention components for perinatal nutrition
services ;
G. Assist providers in the development of the perinatal
nutrition component of the Comprehensive Perinatal
Services model and related application for approval ;
H. Review provider applications for quality and compliance
with regulations for the perinatal nutrition components .
2 . CCNM_JN I TY AND INTER-AGENCY L I A I SCN: (,790 C� °%)
A. Attend meetings to inform medical professionals of CPSP
nutrition services and respond to questions and concerns of
medical professionals regarding CPSP nutrition issues ;
B. Attend community and/or local Advisory meetings to provide
medical expertise and guidance regarding perinatal
nutrition issues ;
C. Facilitate collaboration , coordination , communication and
cooperation among Comprehensive Perinatal Services
Providers and providers of related services ( i . e. MediCal
intake, CCS, WIC, etc. ) regarding perinatal nutrition
needs , issues and resources .
D. Attend regional and statewide meetings to share methodologies
and strategies for implementing perinatal nutrition
aspects of the program.
3. PROVIDER RELATICNS 'AND TECFNICAL ASSISTANCE:
A. Com unicate with CPSP providers on issues affecting the
provision of perinatal nutrition services within their
practices ;
B. Plan and/or provide training and/or inservice workshops
for provider ( sl ) staff to increase their skills in providing
quality perinatal nutrition services ;
C. Consult with providers regarding methodologies and
strategies for Comprehensive Perinatal Services Program
implementation of perinatal nutrition services ;
D. Identify and evaluate perinatal nutrition resources
and materials ;
E. Develop and field test materials for perinatal nutrition
services ;
F. Consult with providers regarding perinatal nutrition
materials and resources most appropriate for clients ;
G. Provide consultation to providers concerning patients with
significant perinatal nutrition problems ;
H. Develop protocols for meeting newly emerging perinatal
nutrition needs . \
4. NED I CAL QUALITY ASSURANCE: (A-9%)
A. Assess that adequate protocols have been developed for the
perinatal nutrition aspects of the Comprehensive
Perinatal Services Program within six months of provider
approval ;
B. Develop quality assurance assessment tools for review of
perinatal nutrition services ;
C. Conduct chart review for documentation of : adherence to
accepted standards of care (and program regulations ) , the
completeness and quality of orientation , assessments and
interventions , and appropriate use of the Individual Care
Plan for perinatal nutrition services ;
D. Assess the strengths and weaknesses of provider( s ' ) staff
regarding provision of perinatal nutrition services ;
E. Provide recommendations to providers on methods for
improving protocols , staff skills , documentation and
provision of perinatal nutrition services .
