Traditionally the President of the United States and the Governor
of California have declared May as Older Americans' Month and
Older Californians' Month.
The U.S. Commissioner on Aging has established "Celebrate!
America's Coming of Age" as the theme for the May, 1990 Older
Americans Celebration in recognition of the unprecedented growth
in our older population. By the year 2020, the projections
estimate that 251, 000 Contra Costa residents will be age 60 or

This theme focuses on the fact that the aging of our population is
changing not only the way we live and work but the types of
services, products and housing we need. The aging of our
population is changing our individual and family life, our
community structure and our expectations of what our national
institutions should provide for our older population. In
addition, we should celebrate the vast reservoir of talent,
knowledge and experience that our older population offers and
make use of the valuable resources they provide.
Among the special events scheduled for Contra Costa County during
the month of May will be
1. May 2 , 1990
Conference on Long Term-Care: Dilemma for Today,
Solutions for Tomorrow
John Muir Medical Center, Ball Auditorium
The Social Service Department and its Office on Aging
has collaborated with a variety of community groups and
organizations to organize this conference. This
conference will highlight one of the most significant
issues facing the older population of our county,
state, and nation-- how to provide affordable
comprehensive care to functionally impaired elders.
The conference will put particular emphasis on local
planning and advocacy efforts for the future.
2 . May 10, 1990
Senior Information Day
Richmond Convention Center
This is the eighth annual event sponsored by the
Richmond Commission on Aging, senior service providers,
and senior clubs and organizations from throughout West
County. There will be a wide variety of information
booths from service providers for elders, food, and
entertainment at this event traditionally attended by
hundreds of individual seniors.
3 . May 29, 1990
Volunteers for Seniors Awards Luncheon
Gateway Clubhouse, Rossmoor
The County Advisory Council on Aging is sponsoring a
luncheon to honor senior citizens from each community
in the county who are deserving of recognition for
contributions towards the well-being of elders in their
local community and the county.
The Social Service Department for its Office on Aging would like
to express appreciation and gratitude to all persons age 60+ in
the county for their many contributions to the growth and
development of our nation, state and county by recommending that
the month of May be designated SENIOR CITIZENS ' MONTH.
