WHEREAS Senator John A. Nejedly has consistently and successfully pursued the
goal, of providing for the wisest management of the public's natural resources
for the future; and
WHEREAS as a legislator Senator Nejedlyauthored major legislation in the area.
of environmental protection, including the Forest Protective Act, Suisun Marsh
Protective Act, Urban, and Coastal Park Bond Act, Litter Control, Recycling and
Resources Recovery Act, Rare or Endangered Native Plant Act; Parklands 'and
Renewable Resources Investment Program Act, California Parklands Act, Solid
Waste Management Act, and numerous bills relating to the state park" system,
wildlife protection and management and forestry and has been a leader in the
fight. to maintain high.'water quality in the Delta and San Francisco Bay; and
WHEREAS the Senator demonstrates his interest in ourmost important natural
resource, our children, by his activities in community affairs which . include
founder and president .of the Contra Costa Youth Association, Park and Recreation
Council, Children's Vision Center of the East Bay and the-Boy Scouts of America;
and
WHEREAS in 1963, while serving as Contra Costa County District Attorney, John
purchased property at Hawley Lake in Plumas County 'and", with the assistance of
elected officials, police and civic leaders, established Camp .Hawley as a
.recreational fac"ility for children at Juvenile Hall and for families on welfare;
then, consumed by civic activities and unable to continue with this project, in
1971 he turned the camp over to. the Easter Seal :Society to be used by disabled
children; and finally, in 1980 Senator Nejedly deeded the' proper ty to the Boy
Scouts of America with the provision that two weeks be set aside each year for
use of disadvantaged children; and
WHEREAS Senator .Nejedly . showed his concern and compassion for disadvantaged
children by establishing a camp at Hawley Lake, now ,known as Camp Nejedly, and
through his leadership, personal dedication and generosity, has assured that
Camp Nejedly will- be available now and. in the future as a camp for children;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT BY .THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS. OF. CONTRA COSTA COUNTY,
CALIFORNIA RESOLVED the Senator John A. Nejedly is COMMENDED for. his
contributions to the welfare of the children of Contra Costa County.
PASSED by.unanimous vote of- the :Board members present on this 15th day, of
May, 1990

contributions to the welfare _of the children of. Contra, Costa County.
