HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 04031990 - T.B T.B THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA Adopted this Order on April 3 , 1990 by the following vote: AYES: Supervisors Powers, Schroder, McPeak, Torlakson and Fanden NOES: None ABSENT: None ABSTAIN: None --------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- SUBJECT: Proclaiming April 1990 as Earthquake Preparedness Month In Contra Costa County IT IS BY THE BOARD ORDERED that Resolution 90/201 proclaiming April as Earthquake Preparedness Month in Contra Costa County is ADOPTED; Resolution 90/202 is PRESENTED to Arthur L.Simon expressing the Board' s appreciation for his sponsorship of the earthquake preparedness poster contest; a contribution from Simon Home Center is ACCEPTED for the expenses of the poster contest; and the announcement of a duck, cover and hold earthquake drill to be held April 4, 1990 in the County Administration Building, the presentation of a song by Fair Oaks Elementary School students, and the presentation of awards to the poster contest winners are ACKNOWLEDGED. Dept. : Clerk of the Board v cc: Office of Emergency Services ey ,Dept IN THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, STATE OF CALIFORNIA In the Matter of Recognizing) Simon Home Center as ) RESOLUTION NO. 90/ 202 Sponsor of 1990 Earthquake ) Poster Contest ) WHEREAS, the Governor of the State of California and this Board declare April of each year as Earthquake Preparedness Month; and WHEREAS, Contra Costa County, through the County Office of Emergency Services, undertakes special efforts during the month of April to increase county residents' awareness of earthquakes and the measures they should take to minimize potential personal injury or property damage; and WHEREAS, a part of the county's public awareness campaign is an Earthquake Preparedness Poster Contest conducted in elementary schools throughout the county; and WHEREAS, Mr. Arthur L. Simon, Vice President, Simon Home Center, Walnut Creek, has graciously offered to sponsor this year's poster contest and provide the funds to cover the contest costs, including cash and other awards to contest winners. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT BY THIS BOARD RESOLVED that it extends its sincerest appreciation to Mr. Arthur L. Simon and Simon Home Center for sponsoring the 1990 Earthquake Preparedness Poster Contest and for recognizing the importance of the county's efforts to encourage citizens to implement disaster preparedness measures. Phil Batchelor, Clerk of the Board of Supervisors and County Administrator Bv Y Dep y Clerk { IN THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, STATE OF CALIFORNIA In the Matter of Proclaiming) April, 1990 as Earthquake ) RESOLUTION NO. 90/ 201 Preparedness Month ) WHEREAS, the State of California continues to experience significant seismic activity, as evidenced by the October 17, 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake which struck the San Francisco Bay area, killing 62 persons, injuring more than 3, 000 and causing over $5 billion in property damage; and WHEREAS, Contra Costa County is situated on five known earthquake faults and could experience a damaging earthquake at any time; and WHEREAS, earthquake related loss of life and property can be minimized if emergency preparedness measures are taken by county residents before the next damaging earthquake occurs; and WHEREAS, the Contra Costa County Office of Emergency Services works with the Governor's Office of Emergency Services, cities, other governmental agencies, service organizations, educational institutes, and businesses to provide earthquake safety information and training to residents throughout the county: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT BY THIS BOARD RESOLVED, that the month of April, 1990, is hereby proclaimed as Earthquake Preparedness Month, and all residents are urged to learn what to do before, during, and after an earthquake to prevent injury, loss of life, and property damage, and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Contra Costa County will continue its earthquake awareness and emergency preparedness training programs and will cooperate with public and private agencies in an effort to urge all citizens to take appropriate steps to prepare themselves and their families to cope with a damaging earthquake. PASSED and ADOPTED by the unanimous vote of the Board on the 3rd day of April, 1990.
