SUBJECTt
REiZW OF RECYCLING PRACTICES IN COUNTY OFFICES
SPECIFIC REQUEST(8) OR RECOMMENDATION(S) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDED ACTION: Refer to the Environmental Affairs
Committee to review recycling practices in our county offices. Direct
the county Recycling Coordinator to conduct a survey of recycling
practices within the departments.
MCKROOUND INFORMATION: A county employee recently brought
to my attention her observation that recycling practices within the
county departments is extremely limited. She points out that
telephone books and soda pop cans are not recycled and colored paper
that is not recyclable are used and many other wastes are being
disposed of without thought or regard to our environment.
This employee raises a very good point. I would like to
initiate a review of recycling being done within all our county
departments and offices and develop a plan for increasing an effective
recycling program at all levels.

Dear Mr. Torlakson:
I watched your interview ,on telev cion 3/15/90 and wanted to b ing
a couple of items to your attent on that you had made mention of.
I was fascinated when you su gested that we start raItt
ing
projects in our neighborhoods hen the County that you. wfor
does not involve itself in the issues. As a County emploand
having worked in several die ict offices I have yet to any
real concern other than white aper cans being placed for reing
purposes . We also have to phone books that are not read.
Soda pop cans that are not r cycled. Use of colored paper is
not recyclable and many o er wastes being disposed ofout
thought or regard to our • vironment.
These are real and basic issues that you could use as a beginning
for your recycling pr ect. It's something like the saying
"Charity begins at home' only insert recycling.
Thank you for your ki d attention to this matter.
Very truly are,
T. Sherbou e
P.S. I know that you are from District 5 but it would be
appreciated if you would voice your concerns for all the people of
the county irregardless of the city in which they live since you
r6i esent the county.
