HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 03061990 - 1.55 . 1-055 TO: BOARD OF SUPERVISORS Contra FROM: Phil Batchelor, County Administrator "rte 1, COSta County DATE: March 6, 1990 COSTA CpUN'- GT SUBJECT: Future Disposition of the Publication "Raising Parents" SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION RECOMMENDATIONS Approve the following recommended actions to be taken regarding the future disposition of the publication Raising Parents - Nine Powerful Principles. 1 ) Acknowledge that any obligations to the County for publication of the book have been satisfied through its sale and distribution. 2 ) Support the concept of donating the first year' s net proceeds, after federal and state tax requirements are satisfied, from commercial publication of the book to a family or children oriented nonprofit organization, such as the Family Alliance of Contra Costa. BACKGROUND The Board of Supervisors on November 8 , 1988 supported staff efforts to work with the Private/Public Executive Council to produce the book , Raising Parents - Nine Powerful Principles, designed to assist in strengthening families, and to identify appropriate areas of County programs and operations for the book' s distribution. Since that time nearly all of the 20,000 copies printed have been sold at cost to individuals, large corporations ' wellness programs, conference attendees, parent groups, hospital program clients, marriage license applicants, governmental agencies, and many others. Proceeds from donations and sale of the books published by the County have been deposited to the County Treasury. Arrangements for publication have been made with St. Martin' s Press, Inc. through The Philip Lief Group, New York. Therefore, the County will not print any more books and will not be involved in its sale or distribution after the remaining inventory is depleted. The contract requires that advance funds and royalties be paid to the author and copyright holder of the work. Consideration is being given to donating the first year proceeds to the Family Alliance of Contra Costa.
