I. RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Approve and authorize Larry Cohen, Prevention Program Director, to
execute and submit to the U. S. Department of Health and Human
Services - Centers for Disease Control, Funding Application
#29-383 requesting $15,400 of funding for a "Together We Can Stop
the Violence" Consensus Conference to be held in February 1990 in
the Bay Area. This application is for a one-year project effective
September 1, 1989 through August 31, 1990 to coordinate the
development and organization of the conference.
II. FINANCIAL IMPACT:

result in $15, 400 of federal funding. The County's in-kind
contribution of $7, 344 consists of existing program staff and
indirect costs currently included in the budget.
III. REASONS FOR RECOMMENDATIONS/BACKGROUND:
If this application is approved by the Centers for Disease Control,
the Health Services Department's Prevention Program will sponsor
a three-day conference in February 1990, bringing together experts
and practitioners from across the nation to advance violence
prevention efforts both locally and nationally. State and national
experts will meet for two days of presentations and discussions on
areas of critical concern to the field of violence prevention. The
third day will be a symposium for 150 participants. The symposium
will focus on prevention methods, coalition building, conflict.
management, data collection and analysis and other issues.
The goal of the conference is to facilitate professional inter-
action which builds consensus towards a national agenda for the
prevention of violence. The conference will enable local community
groups and leaders to benefit from national expertise and increase
citizen awareness and involvement in violence prevention efforts.
Aiconference of this magnitude will bring the County considerable
prestige for its leadership role in a national health issue.
In order to meet. the deadline for submission, a draft copy of the
application has been forwarded to the U. S. Department of Health
and Human Services, but subject to Board approval.
