HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 06131989 - 1.55 TO: BOARD OF SUPERVISORS FROM: PHIL BATCHELOR County Administrator DATE: June 1, 1989 SUBJECT: CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY PATROL FOREIGN VEHICLE REGISTRATION PROGRAM Specific Request(s) or Recommendations(s) & Background & Justification RECOMMENDATION: Accept report from County Administrator on status of California Highway Patrol's foreign vehicle identification policy in Contra Costa County. REASONS FOR RECOMMENDATION/BACKGROUND: On April 11, 1989, the Board of Supervisors requested a further report on the status of this program. The local office of the California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that for the first four months of calendar year 1989, 377 new out-of-state registration cases were started. Of those, 230 were registered and $62,495 in outstanding fees were collected. In 1988, 2,231 new out-of-state registration cases were started. Of those, 1,676 were registered and $270,739 in outstanding fees were collected. Most foreign vehicle registration cases are received from CHP personnel. Other cases are received on a limited basis from other public agencies and citizens. All cases are given to the CHP's Foreign Vehicle Registration Officer, who is solely responsible for processing those cases. Acting Commander R. V. Kinion indicates that support for this program has been extremely positive. The Patrol believes that it is having a significant impact on the foreign vehicle registration problems, even with limited resources.
