M347 6/82 r 1_045 Proposed Salary Level C5-1919 ($3094-3761) i March 1962 Contra Costa County Revised and Retitle: May 1989 ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN SUPERVISOR - LAND SURVEYOR DEFINITION: Under general direction, to supervise and occasionally perform difficult specialized and responsible technical civil engineering office work (except structural design) in connection with public works projects, to supervise survey crews in the field; coordinate maintenance of survey records and field controls; provide technical assistance to other staff members; and to do related work as required. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: This class, with the Engineering Technician Supervisor - Materials Testing, is distinguished as the only full supervisory class in the engineering technician series. Incumbents may serve as Supervisor in the Right of Way Section or in the Field Survey Section. Supervision is generally provided to entry, journey and senior level Engineering Technicians and others. Direction is normally received from a division head who is a Registered Engineer. TYPICAL TASKS: In the Right of Way section, organizes, supervises and coordinates the activities of the Right of Way engineering squad engaged in establishing and laying out rights of way and easements for highways and other public works projects; directs the preparation of legal descriptions and plats for the acquisition of property; supervises the review of work submitted by other public agencies and private engineering firms for public Right of Way; supervises research needed to determine ownership of properties; interprets intent of deeds; initiates and maintains communications with utilities and other agencies as needed to coordinate activities of common interest. In the field survey section, supervises and trains survey personnel; reviews survey maps and descriptions for accuracy and makes recommendations for improvement if needed; provides information regarding survey regulations, procedures, maps and related data to engineers and other surveyors; performs professional surveying and supervises calculation and filing of records of surveys for the monument preservation program; plans, organizes and supervises the precise field survey and office engineering work involved in the development and maintenance of the California Coordinate System in Contra Costa County and of records based upon this system. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: License Required: Valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Valid California State Land Surveyor's License. Education: Equivalent to graduation from high school . Experience: Two years of full-time or equivalent experience as a Senior Level Engineering Technician with Contra Costa County. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: A thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of non-structural civil engineering design; thorough knowledge of real property description procedures and of surveying practices; thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering drafting and mathematics used in surveying; knowledge of safe working methods; ability to plan, organize and supervise the work of others; ability to deal effectively and harmoniously with other workers, departments, public and private agencies and the general public; ability to collect and analyze data and to write engineering reports; ability to read and interpret plans and specifications; ability to read and interpret maps.
