HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 05021989 - 1.38 Vv" 1-038 TO: BOARD.OF SUPERVISORS Contra FROM: Phil Batchelor, County Administrator Costa n. s l x - County DATE: April 24, 1989 �oUU SUBJECT: LEGISLATION: AB 887 (Margolin) SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION RECOMMENDATION: Adopt a position in SUPPORT of AB 887 by Assemblyman Margolin which directs the State Department of Health Services to continue the AZT subsidy program so as to continue to make this drug available to persons infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) . BACKGROUND: The State Department of Health Services has been operating an AZT subsidy program which was established in 1987 with federal funds. This program is due to expire June 30, 1989 . State funds were appropriated by Chapter 977, Statutes of 1988 for this purpose. Assemblyman Margolin has introduced AB 887 as urgency legislation to continue the AZT subsidy program indefinitely using the funds from Chapter 977 , Statutes of 1988. Dr. William Walker, in his capacity as President of the Health Officers Association of California, and the County' s Health Services Director, Mark Finucane, support AB 887 and have urged the Board of Supervisors to also indicate their support of AB 887 . Dr. Walker has noted that the money made available by AB 887 is urgently needed to continue the county' s efforts to prevent and treat the HIV virus and that these efforts cannot be continued using only county funds.
