Specific Request(s) or Recommendations(s) & Background & Justification
RECOMMENDATION
Adopt a position in SUPPORT of AB 618 by Assemblywoman Speier and several co-authors,which
requires that packaged food have labels specifying the fat and cholesterol content of the food.
BACKGROUND:
Current law does not require that packaged food contain on its label statements of the amount of fat
and cholesterol contained in each serving of the food. Assemblywoman Speier has introduced AB
618 which would impose this requirement.
Since AB 618 is consistent with the Board of Supervisors position on nutritional education and the
need to provide information which permits consumers to determine the amount of various
substances which are being consumed, it is appropriate for the Board to indicate its support of AB
618.
