SUBJECT: Legislation: Assembly Bill 2207 (Campbell)
and Senate Bill 1385 (Keene)
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDATION•
Indicate that the Board of Supervisors is the SPONSOR of AB 2207
by Assemblyman Campbell which requires that all food labels
indicate the fat, cholesterol and fiber content of the food, and
SUPPORTS SB 1385 by Senator Keene which would require labeling
food in fast food restaurants if the food is prepared with animal
fat or specified saturated vegetable oils.
BACKGROUND:
'On December 6, 1988, the Board of Supervisors adopted a report
from the Internal Operations Committee which asked the Health
Services Director to identify legislative options which would
further nutrition education efforts undertaken by the Board of
Supervisors. Assemblyman Campbell has introduced AB 2207 as a
part of this nutrition education effort. AB 2207 requires that
all packaged foods include a statement of the nutritional content
of the food, including total fat, cholesterol and fiber content.
In view of the fact that AB 2207 would further the Board' s
nutrition education program by allowing shoppers to determine the
nutritional content of products before they buy them, it is
appropriate for the Board to indicate that it is the SPONSOR of
AB 2207.
In addition, Senator Keene has introduced SB 1385 which imposes
similar requirements on fast-food restaurants. Specifically, SB
1385 would prohibit the sale of any food by a fast-food
establishment if the food is prepared with animal fat, coconut
oil, cocoa butter, palm oil, or palm kernel oil unless the
container clearly indicates which of these fats or oils is used
in the preparation of the food.
