MICHAEL WALFORD, CHIEF ENGINEER DATE: APRIL 4, 1989 SUBJECT: CREEK RESTORATION GRANT - CITY OF WALNUT CREEK Specific Request(s) or Recommendation(s) & Background & Justification I. RECOMMENDATION ENDORSE application by City of Walnut Creek for a creek restoration grant and CONFIRM support letter by the Public Works Department dated March 2, 1989. II. FINANCIAL IMPACT There is no financial impact. III. REASONS FOR RECOMMENDATION/BACKGROUND The State Department of Water Resources has recently established a grant program providing funds for urban creek preservation and restoration. Local groups have been successful in securing grants for planning studies in the Tice Creek and Grayson Creek areas. The City of Walnut Creek desires to study and design the elements necessary to restore nearly 6, 000 feet of creeks to create downtown linear parks, green space, and an enhanced riparian environment. The Flood Control District will provide advice regarding creek erosion and capacity. RECOMMENDATION ENDORSE application by Friends of Creeks in Urban Settings (FOCUS) for a creek restoration grant and DIRECT the Chief Engineer to prepare a letter of support. II. FINANCIAL IMPACT There is no financial impact. III. REASONS FOR RECOMMENDATION/BACKGROUND The State Department of Water Resources has recently established a grant program providing funds for urban creek preservation and restoration. Local groups have been successful in securing grants for planning studies in the Tice Creek and Grayson Creek areas. FOCUS has over the past year utilized a similar grant to develop a work plan including a restoration and erosion control plan for the Grayson and Murderers Creek area in Pleasant Hill. This grant would allow implementation of the work plan.
