February 24, 1989 ST'9 COl1K'� SUBJECT: Fourth Annual International Winter Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run SPECIFIC REOUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION RECOMMENDED ACTION WHEREAS, the Fourth International Winter Special Olympics Games will open in Reno, Nevada, and Lake Tahoe, California on April 2, 1989; and WHEREAS, 1400 special athletes from 20 countries will make the largest Winter Special Olympics Games ever held; and WHEREAS, the ceremonial Winter Games Law Enforcement Torch Run will take place between San Francisco and Squaw Valley, March 23 through April 2, 1989; and WHEREAS, the Torch will be carried in relays by law enforcement officers from each of the fifty states and twenty other nations in an effort to raise money for the International Winter Special Olympics Games; and WHEREAS, the Torch will be carried through the County of Contra Costa on its way to Squaw Valley on March 25, 1989; NOW, THEREFORE, I, Tom Torlakson, Chairman of the Board of Supervisors, do hereby proclaim Saturday, March 25, 1989 as SPECIAL OLYMPICS TORCH RUN DAY in Contra Costa County, and that all citizens are called upon to come out in force to cheer on the runners and support the International Winter Special Olympics Games.
