Adopted this Order on June 21, 1.988_ _ , by the following vote: AYES: Supervisors Powers, Fanden, McPeak, Torlakson, Schroder NOES: None ABSENT: None ABSTAIN: None SUBJECT: Internal Operations Committee Report on Self-Esteem and Prevention of Community Problems The Board on May 10, 1988, accepted the report of the Internal Operations Committee and deferred to this day consideration of the recommendations of the Committee relative to the establishment of a task force on self-esteem and prevention of community problems. Supervisor Torlakson presented an overall view of the concept of self-esteem, following which the Chairman opened the discussion for public comment. The persons as noted below expressed their support/opposition. to the proposal including comments that values established or espoused by the task force would alienate children from traditional values of the family, religion, and society; the importance of . developing a self-esteem program and securing a funding source to sustain it; the need for people to feel good about themselves.; concern that self-esteem would foster an ideology to be free of the restraints of authority; concern that the self-esteem concept could - erode the family structure or the privacy of the family; the need to search for values to develop self-esteem and insure that the values are not misguided; concern that a humanistic_ religious theory would be promoted; a statement that low self-esteem increases the probability for an individual to experience personal. problems, as well as poor job or school performance; concern with the lack of guidelines for the charge/work of the self-esteem. task force; the need for better parent-child communication and the. role- of the parent in teaching values; allegations that previous self-esteem task forces sought to establish programs contrary to. the family structure and interfered with religious teaching that children receive from their parents and churches; a request for representation of disabled people on the the Task Force; concern. that establishment of a self-esteem task force would restrict an individual's freedom of choice; lack of an adequate definition of- self-esteem; supposition that lack of self-esteem is the root of family problems in Contra Costa County; the need to assist developmentally disabled or retared individuals to feel .good about themselves; and a request for justification for the establishment of a self-esteem program in Contra Costa County.
