SUBJECT: Internal Operations Committee Report on Self-Esteem
and Prevention of Community Problems
The Board on May 10, 1988, accepted the report of the Internal
Operations Committee and deferred to this day consideration of the
recommendations of the Committee relative to the establishment of a
task force on self-esteem and prevention of community problems.
Supervisor Torlakson presented an overall view of the concept
of self-esteem, following which the Chairman opened the discussion
for public comment.
The persons as noted below expressed their support/opposition.
to the proposal including comments that values established or
espoused by the task force would alienate children from traditional
values of the family, religion, and society; the importance of
. developing a self-esteem program and securing a funding source to
sustain it; the need for people to feel good about themselves.;
concern that self-esteem would foster an ideology to be free of the
restraints of authority; concern that the self-esteem concept could -
erode the family structure or the privacy of the family; the need
to search for values to develop self-esteem and insure that the
values are not misguided; concern that a humanistic_ religious
theory would be promoted; a statement that low self-esteem
increases the probability for an individual to experience personal.
problems, as well as poor job or school performance; concern with
the lack of guidelines for the charge/work of the self-esteem. task
force; the need for better parent-child communication and the. role-
of the parent in teaching values; allegations that previous
self-esteem task forces sought to establish programs contrary to.
the family structure and interfered with religious teaching that
children receive from their parents and churches; a request for
representation of disabled people on the the Task Force; concern.
that establishment of a self-esteem task force would restrict an
individual's freedom of choice; lack of an adequate definition of-
self-esteem; supposition that lack of self-esteem is the root of
family problems in Contra Costa County; the need to assist
developmentally disabled or retared individuals to feel .good about
themselves; and a request for justification for the establishment
