OF SUPERVISORS Contra FROM: Supervisor Tom Powers Costa DATE: May 10, 1988 County SUBJECT: Support of Assembly Bill 4525 SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATION(S) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION RECOMMENDATION: 1. That the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County support Assembly Bill 4525 which provides assistance to K-12 schools for the purpose of improving education through the use of technology. 2. That the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County instruct the county's Sacramento lobbyist to pursue the passage of this legislation. BACKGROUND: Assembly Bill 4525 was introduced by Assemblyman Sam Farr to. significantly expand resources for K-12 schools to develop programs using technology to improve education. This bill would provide grant funding across the state allowing educators to initiate and develop local programs applying technology as an instructional tool . It is well recognized that high technology industries are extremely important to the economic well-being of Contra Costa County and the Bay Area generally. The Board of Supervisors should encourage efforts to enhance this economic base through improved education in this field. This legislation encourages the use of technological advances in our schools. By utilizing these resources as well as instructional television, children in Contra Costa County and throughout the state will be able to obtain the skills they need to perpetuate our technological advantage.
