FINANCIAL IMPACT: None BACKGROUND: On April 28, 1987, your Board requested that the Emergency Medical Care Committee under- take a study of duplicate emergency response problems in Contra Costa County. An Ad Hoc committee was formed to respond to this request. The subcommittee identified and reviewed 12 options which could potentially decrease responses to medical emergencies without compromising patient care. Of these 12 options , three were recommended for consideration: .priority dispatch .cancellation of first responders by on-scene ambulances .paramedic units housed in fire stations The primary recommendation was that each of the six medical dispatch centers be encouraged to adopt a priority dispatch system in accordance with established County standards . On February 17, 1988, the Emergency Medical Care Committee endorsed the subcommittee' s recommendation and agreed that priority dispatching has the greatest potential impact on reducing unnecessary medical responses. The County Emergency Medical Services Unit has developed priority dispatching standards and is working with jurisdictions as they become ready to implement such a system. This report is for information only and is unrelated to other ambulance response issues that are under discussion. CONTINUED ON ATTACHMENT!
