SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATION(S) .& BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDATION•
That the Board of Supervisors adopt a position supporting AB
4266 - Farr, "New Technology - Providers of Services to the
Homeless" ; and
Further that the Board authorize the Welfare Director to send
letters of support to the County's legislative delegation
outlining the Board' s support for AB 4266.
BACKGROUND:
On April 26, 1988 the Board accepted a report from the
Executive Director - Housing Authority on HANDSNET. HANDSNET.,
a pilot project started in 1987, is a computer network for
advocates and service providers working to address the
problems of hunger and homelessness.
AB 4266 allocates $150, 000 from the .State General Fund to the
State Office of Information Technology for a grant to HANDSNET
to assist with expanding the system and maintaining current
data.
The Social Service Department and Shelter, Inc. are using
Social Service Department monies and Challenge Grant monies to
purchase a computer and the HANDSNET program. State funding
support for HANDSNET would assist our efforts to provide
services by ensuring a current data base statewide and
expansion of the HANDSNET network.
