RYDINGSWORD Contra Social Service Director Costa a D TE . V l April 26, 1988 County EJECT; Support for SB 1109 - Mello "Nutrition Programs for the Elderly" SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATION(S) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION RECOMMENDATION• That the Board of Supervisors adopt a position supporting SB 1109 - Mello, "Nutrition Programs for the Elderly;" and, Further that the Board authorize the Welfare Director to send letters to the County's legislative delegation, appropriate legislative committees, and the Governor outlining our support for SB 1109. BACKGROUND: SB 1109 will allocate $4 .5 million from the State General Fund to the State Department of Aging to fund Local Area Agency on Aging/Nutrition Programs in contracting for increased numbers of home delivered meals for the elderly. SB 1109 also encourages local Area Agencies on Aging to use "alternative service models designed to reduce social isolation . . . " of elderly persons. Currently the Contra Costa County Home-delivered Meals Program provides 1 meal per day to 400 elderly persons. There is an existing waiting list of persons who have requested home-delivered meals, but cannot be served by the current program. Additionally, there are entire areas in the County in which no home-delivered meals are provided, such as Rossmore. It is estimated that SB 1109 will allow the County's program to increase by 25% Such an increase would reduce the current waiting list. SB 1109 is being supported by the County' s Hunger Task Force and the Nutrition Council. The Area Agency on Aging Advisory Council is expected to support this bill at its May 18th meeting.
