Results of this investigation are to be returned to the Board in 90 days BACKGROUND: The George Miller Jr. bridge is unassessable for pedestrians and bicyclists. CALTRANS will provide up to approximately $230,000 annually to operate a transportation alternative to the bridge, at least until the additional span is built 12 years from now. CALTRANS is to report to BCDC by October 1, 1988 on the option of their choice. They are willing to dedicate funds, equivalent to operating a van service, to the ferry. They are unwilling to operate a ferry. The trail around the bay is' considered complete except for the crossing between Martinez and Benicia. There are approximately 70 county employees living in Benicia who potentially could ride the ferry to work. The ferry could also become a recreational attraction. (June 8, the Institute of Transportation Studies at UCB is holding a conference addressing development of ferry service on the bay. ) CONTINUED ON ATTACHMENT: YES SIGNATURE: RECOMMENDATION OF COUNTY ADMINISTRATOR RECOMMENDATION OF BOARD COMMITTEE APPROVE OTHER SIGNATURE(S) ACTION OF BOARD ON May 10, 1988 APPROVED AS RECOMMENDED OTHER X REFERRED proposed bicycle/pedestrian ferry service between Martinez and Benicia to the Transportation Committee.
