Acceptance of $29,000 Donation from Chevron U.S.A. Inc.
Specific Request(s) or Recommendation(s) & Background and Justification
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATION(S) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
I. RECOMMENDED ACTION:
A. Find that the unemployment of youths in Contra Costa County is a
continuing concern, and accept the private donation of $29,000 from
Chevron U.S.A. Inc., to assist in generating summer jobs for a public
purpose, complies with California Government Code Section 25355;
B. Authorize the Executive Director, Contra Costa County Private Industry
Council, to administer said funds for payment of wages and fringe
benefits of Contra Costa County Youths hired under the County's unsub-
sidized 1988 Summer Youth Jobs Program (SYJP);
C. Authorize said Director to execute non financial worksite agreements
and to begin hiring, on or after May 6, 1988, as temporary County
employees, unemployed youths residing in Contra Costa County,
for subsequent SYJP worksite placement with EDD offices, Chevron and if
positions are available, PIC selected local public and/or non profit
private agencies; and
D. Request the Director to report back to the Board on worksite
agreements executed, and number of youths hired or otherwise assisted
by the 1988 Summer Youth Jobs Program (SYJP).
II. FINANCIAL IMPACT:
None.
III. REASONS FOR RECOMMENDATION/BACKGROUND:
For the past five years, Chevron U.S.A. Inc., has made similar private
donations to the County to assist in alleviating unemployment problem of
Youths. The Summer Youth Jobs Program (SYJP) has been a successful one, in
1985, the program received Presidential commendation for being on of the
Nation's successful public/private youth employment programs.
Mr. Robert W. Summers, Public Affairs Manager, informed the Private
Industry Council that Chevron U.S.A. Inc., is again donating $29,000 to the
County's 1988 "Summer Youth Jobs Program."
