SUBJECT: Presentation By Mental Health Advisory Board
The Board of Supervisors today heard a presentation by members of
the Contra Costa County Mental Health Advisory Board.
Those present to deliver the 1987 report of the Contra Costa
Mental Health Advisory Board were:
Dennis Lepak, 2525 Stanwell Drive, Concord, who presented a brief
overview of the report and expressed appreciation for the Board of
Supervisors ' support for the needs of mentally ill children and
adults;
Cynthia Miller, 105 Jose Lane, Martinez, Vice-Chair and Program
Committee Chair, reported on activities related to adults and the
elderly;
Joann Aiello, 66 Emerson, Crockett, Children' s Advocate and Chair
of Children' s Committee, reported on the activities of the Children' s
Committee of the Mental Health Advisory Board.
Supervisor Fanden moved to no longer mix mentally ill children
with adults.
The Board discussed the issue of separating mentally ill children
from mentally ill adults in County facilities.
Supervisor Torlakson recommended that the motion include
direction to staff to come back to the Board with a creative list of
alternatives and the costs associated with the alternatives.
Supervisor Powers recommended requesting a recommendation from
staff on the resolution of this issue.
Supervisor Fanden amended her motion to direct staff to provide a
recommendation to the Board of Supervisors within a month on a
resolution of the issue of a policy of not mixing mentally ill
children with mentally ill adults.
Therefore, IT IS BY THE BOARD ORDERED that the Mental Health
Director is DIRECTED to report to the Board of Supervisors before May
24, 1988 on the feasibility and implications of a policy relative to
the separation of mentally ill children and adults in County
facilities.
