BACKGROUND-.
t
On titarch 1, 1988, the Board of Supervisors reaffirmed its support
for the Bay Area Cancer Prevention Summit and asked the Health
Services Director to report to our Committee on the final details
of the planning for the Summit. , Dr. Brunner presented the
attached report to 'our Committee April 11, 1988..
The Summit will be held May 18 and 19 ' at the Kaiser Family
Foundation Convention Center in Palo Alto. The agenda which is
attached to Dr. Brunner' s memo demonstrates how outstanding this
Summit will be. We have brought together leaders in cancer
research and cancer prevention from the Bay Area as well as
nationally. This Summit is .probably unique in the United States
in bringing together leaders from throughout a geographic
region to :develop a coordinated, regional approach to cancer.
prevention.
As Dr. Brunner indicates in his memo, many of the costs .for the
Summit are being borne by the Kaiser Family Foundation and for
this we are especially grateful. The agenda for the second day
of the. conference is being planned by the Stanford Health
Promotion Resource Center at the Stanford University Medical
School.
We enthusiastically recommend the Board' s endorsement of the Bay
Area Cancer Prevention Summit.

From: Wendel Brunner, M.D. ! subject: Update on Bay Area
Director of Public Health Cancer Prevention Summit
The Bay Area Cancer Prevention Summit is scheduled for May 18th and 19th at the
Kaiser Family Foundation Convention Center in Palo Alto. The conference will be
limited to approximately 80 participants and will consist of representatives
from the Bay Area health departments as well as the American Cancer Society, the
School of Public Health, State Health Services Department, Northern California
Cancer Center, public policy makers, and key agencies and individuals from the
Bay Area. The purpose of the Summit is to evaluate the trends and patterns of
cancer in the Bay Area and to develop a coordinated, regional approach to cancer
prevention. A major component of the conference will be a planning process
which will incorporate the Bay Area health departments and key regional cancer
agencies into an ongoing cancer prevention effort.
The agenda for the first day of the conference is attached. The subjects
covered include the epidemiologic description of cancer in the Bay Area and
various models for interventions. Most of the speakers represent expertise
available here in the Bay Area and will be involved in the ongoing regional pre-
vention efforts. In addition to the local speakers, the following persons will
participate to give a national Perspective to our regional efforts:
From the National Cancer Institute - Jeff McKenna
From the Kaiser Family Foundation - Alvin Tarloff, President
Sarah Samuels, Program Director
Larry Green, Vice President for Health
Promotion
The second day of the conference will be a series of workshops focused on
planning the ongoing regional activities. These workshops will be organized by
Stanford Health Promotion Resource Center.
Funding for this conference has been obtained from the Kaiser Family Foundation,
the State Health Services Department, the Northern California Cancer Center, the
California Public Health Foundation, and local health departments. The evident
interest of the Kaiser Family Foundation and the National Cancer Institute is
particularly encouraging, and we will be pursuing substantial future fundinq
with both of those agencies as well as others.
