SUBJECT: COMMUTER TRAIN STUDY
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATION(S) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDATION:
That the Board of Supervisors direct the Chairman of the
Board to send a letter of support to Assemblyman Tom
Hannigan and MTC in support of Assembly Concurrent
Resolution (ACR132) to finance a $100,000 study of
installing a commuter line on existing tracks along the
Southern Pacific right of way between San Jose, Oakland and
Sacramento, with stops in Martinez, Richmond, Pinole &
Crockett.
Further, request that the study be expanded to include
the feasibility of extending service to Antioch and
Pittsburg.

Ted Nelson, 25 Emerson, Crockett, suggested that the letter sent to Sacramento
include the possible use of diesel coaches to provide interim commuter services
until a more sophisticated system such as light rail is justified. He also urged
that service to Antioch and Pittsburg, although very desirable, Inot hold up
service between Oakland and Sacramento. Supervisor Fanden agreed to include the
use of diesel coaches in the proposal to Sacramento. She also requested that letters
be sent to all cities asking for their support and the support of the citizens for
the proposed service in the form of petitions,
