SYMPTOM CONTROL PROGRAM COORDINATOR
DEFINITION:
Under general direction, coordinates the Health Services Department's
Symptom Control Program for terminally ill patients; coordinates the integration
of multi-discipline services to patients and their families; assists and advises
other care providers on the reeds of terminally ill patients; performs related
work as required.
DISTINGUISHING rHARACTERISTICS:
This single position management class is distinguished as a specialist
in services for the terminally ill in the Health Service Department's Symptcm
Control Program. The incumbent provides direct nursing service to patients,
coordinates the delivery of nursing, medical and psychosocial services and is
the resident expert in the field of symptom control relative to death and the
care of the dying.
This class reports to the Associate Hospital Executive Director-Patient
Care.
TYPICAL TASKS:
Plans, develops and implements policies and procedures for the symptom
control program; coordinates verbal and written communications between members
of the interdisciplinary team; acts as a liaison between.inpatient nursing staff
and the symptom control program interdisciplinary team; plans and conducts
weekly hospice rounds; teaches pain management and symptam control methodologies
such as hypnosis, biofeedback and imagery to terminally ill patients and their

families; provides direct patient nursing care as required for inpatient and
outpatient hospice patients, oversees the scm control program's volunteer
program and provides direction to the lead volunteer; orients and trains volun-
teers and resident physicians in caring for the terminally ill patient; coor-
dinates a round-the-clock call service for terminally ill patients and their
families; serves as liaison with Public Health Nursing and' Hane Health Agency
for the provision of have care; identifies stress arising Fran the inherent
nature of the symptom control program in the team workers, provides support and
makes recanmendations for coping; maintains and sulinits records and reports
including charts and care plans; coordinates and/or leads bereavement and sup-
port groups; monitors quality assurance for the symptan control program; attends
cost center managers meetings and participates as appropriate on hospital/clinic
committees; represents the department in the ccmmunity to educate the public and
publicize the symptan control program.
MINDfJM QUALIFICATTONS:
License: Possession of a valid license as a Registered Nurse in the
State of California.
Education: Possession of a Masters degree in nursing, public health
nursing, counselling, psychology or a closely related field, frau an accredited
college or university.
Experience: Three years of full-time experience or its equivalent as a
Registered Nurse in an acute care hospital, one year of which involved caring
for oncology or terminally ill patients.
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS & ABILITTES:
Knowledge of the principles and practices of hospice care; knowledge of
the medical and psychological aspects of death and dying; knowledge of current

nursing principles and practices; knowledge of symptan control methodologies;
knowledge of applicable utilization review and quality assurance standards and
requirements; knowledge of community resources and programs for the terminally
ill; ability to conduct grief counselling activities; ability to empathetically
relate to the needs of the terminally ill; ability to provide work direction and
training to others; ability to work effectively with an interdisciplinary team
of care providers.
