(M347T-278-5— a„ D R A F T Proposed Salary Range C5-1210 ($1523-1852) January, 1988 ORTHOPEDIC TECHNICIAN DEFINITION Under limited supervision, applies and removes casts; assists with prepara- tion of traction equipment; prepares specialized equipment for use in orthopedic surgeries; maintains inventory levels in the cast roan and perforans other related duties. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS This class is distinguished by its specialization in the application and removal of casts. It is distinguished from Surgical Technologist in that the latter assists the surgeon by handling instruments and possesses specialized knowledge of surgical asceptic techniques. Supervision is received from the Operating Roan Supervisor and medical direction is received fran an orthopedic physician. TYPICAL TASKS Prepares injured areas for cast application by covering with specified protec- tive material; wets, wraps and molds plaster bandages around area of fracture; trims plaster using electric cutter; removes whole and broken casts and alters position of cast to change setting of patients limb or body part, as directed; assembles wooden, metal, plastic or plaster material to make orthopedic splints; assists orthopedic patients through all phases of clinic visit; obtains parts for prescribed traction equipment; assembles and assists with applieaiton of traction equipment; attends surgical rounds; visually inspects traction in use and reports findings to appropriate physician; maintains traction during patient I transfers; instructs nursing personnel in principles and maintenance of traction; prepares surgical suite for orthopedic surgeries by arranging i appropriate equipment; maintains cast roam supply inventory; cleans work area and tools; may remove sutures and apply dressings. MNI" QUALIFICATIONS Education: Graduation fran high school, GID equivalency or California High School Proficiency Certificate. Experience: Six months full time experience or its equivalent in the application and removal of casts. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ARILITIES Knowledge of materials used in the application and removal of casts; abi- lity to assemble traction equipment; ability to apply casts; ability to meet precise limits and standards in molding castss and applying traction equipment; ability to maintain inventory; ability to work under limited supervision.
