DATE: July 14, 1987
MATTER OF' RECORD
SUBJECT: Advisory Boards Workshop--July 14, 1937
This day the Board of Supervisors held a workshop with several
advisory board representatives to discuss more effective lobbying in
Sacramento on behalf of children' s services issues . _Supervisors
Torlakson and Schroder were present. - At no time was a quorum of the
Board present.
Shirley Marchetti, Chair, Human Services Advisory Commission,
agreed to work with Ken Jaffe of the Family and Children.';s Trust Fund
on scheduling a training session for advisory boards on the whole
subject of advocacy with the Legislature.
In addition, Ms . Marchetti agreed to assume the responsibility
to convene the Chairs of the Advisory Boards in the human services
area to review the Board' s draft 1988 Legislative Program and provide
their comments and recommendations to the Board of Supervisors at the
time the Board considers adopting their 1988 Legislative Program.
Mr. Jaffe also suggested that there is a real need for the
County to have a full-time children' s Ombudsman who would advocate with
County departments , the Board, _arid the Legislature for children' s
programs . 111r. Jaffe suggested that some foundations might be interested
in providing funding for such an advocacy program, although I do not
believe there was an agreement to specifically pursue this suggestion.
It was also suggested that each advisory board in the. human
services area needs a legislative committee.
THIS IS A MATTER FOR RECORD PURPOSES ONLY
NO BOARD ACTION TAKEN
