HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 06231987 - S.7 n S• THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA Adopted this Order on June 23 , 1987 , by the following vote: AYES: Supervisors Fanden, Torlakson, Schroder NOES: None ABSENT: Supervisors Powers, McPeak ABSTAIN: None ------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------ SUBJECT: Cost Recovery for Civil Demonstrations Supervisor Robert Schroder referred to the recent protest at the U. S. Naval Weapons Station in Concord and the impact this has on local police jurisdictions in controlling anti-social behavior that may occur as a result of these protests. He noted that the County Administrator had reported that the Sheriff ' s Department had incurred a deficit of approximately $92 , 000 for additional staff. He expressed his support for the civil rights of people in their right to demonstrate, but expressed concern with people willingly and knowingly breaking the law and incurring additional County costs, resulting in the expenditure of funds that could have been used for needed human services programs. Supervisor Tom Torlakson concurred, and expressed support for institution of a cost recovery program to mitigate the impact on County resources because of willful civil disturbances. Therefore, IT IS BY THE BOARD ORDERED that the report of the County Administrator on funds expended for additional police services during the Concord Naval Weapons Station protest is ACCEPTED.
