Retirement as City Manager )
of the City of Pleasant Hill)
James L. Alkire is recognized today for his seventeen years of
competent and dedicated service to the citizens of our County.
He will be retiring from the City of Pleasant Hill on June 19,
1987 .
After graduation from the University of Texas at E1 Paso with a
Bachelor of Business Administration Degree, he taught sixth grade
in 1962. In 1963 be began his graduate work as a Samuel S. Fels
scholar at the prestigious Wharton Graduate School where he
received his Master of Governmental Administration Degree. In
1964 he started his career in the field of city management;
first, in Highland Park, Illinois, and then Centralia, Illinois,
before arriving in Pleasant Hill in 1970.
His particular style of low key leadership and commitment to
community concern has brought about a Commission on Aging, new
facilities for the Police Department and Public Service
Department, balanced budgets, and a risk management program. His
dedication and compassion are imprinted in the hearts of his
colleagues and the citizens of Pleasant Hill. His standard of
excellence has brought recognition to the City of Pleasant Hill
as a financially secure and stable city.
Jim and Margie Alkire are parents of three children and have led
active roles in Pleasant Hill schools. They are leaders in
Friends Abroad, visiting our Sister City and hosting Chilpancingo
families. Jim is a member and past president of the
Pleasant Hill Rotary Club.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of Supervisors that
James L. Alkire be commended for his .service to his community and
his dedication to its citizens.
PASSED AND ADOPTED on June 16, 1987 by a unanimous vote of the
Board.
