CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, STATE OF CALIFORNIA
In the Matter of Proclaiming )
the Week of May 3, 1987 as )
Asian/Pacific American ) RESOLUTION NO. 87/249
Heritage Week in Contra Costa)
County )
The Contra Costa County recognizes the citizens of Asian and
Pacific decent. They have brought to this County many varied
traditions and heritages of their homelands and have brought to
the County many special qualities.
We admire their determination and persistence to their right to
life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. From 1910 to 1940,
most Chinese emigrating to the United States were detained at
the Angel Island Immigration Station in San Francisco for two
weeks up to two years pending investigations to determine their
right to enter the United States. Many Filipino citizens
emigrated to the United States in search of freedom and
prosperity. Without their strength to achieve their goal to
enter the United States, many would not now be citizens of our
County.
The citizens of Asian/Pacific ancestry provide an invaluable
contribution to the well being of Contra Costa County. and the
community and it is proper and desirable to celebrate with the
Asian/Pacific people to forge a close bond between our nations
and their people.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of Supervisors of
Contra Costa County that the week of May 3, 1987 is PROCLAIMED
Asian/Pacific American Heritage Week and that all citizens are
urged to join in this observance with appropriate ceremonies
and activities.
