May 11-17, 1987 as California ) RESOLUTION NO. 87/263
Senior Homebound Awareness Week )
WHEREAS many elderly people do not eat adequately because they
cannot afford to do so and they lack the ability to select and prepare
nourishing and well balanced meals and have limited mobility which impairs
their capacity to shop and cook for themselves; and
WHEREAS these problems and other physiological, pysehological,
social and economic changes that occur with aging result in a pattern of
living which causes malnutrition and mental deterioration, often resulting
in premature and unnecessary institutionalization; and
WHEREAS more than 94,750 home-delivered meals will be served to
nearly 1,000 Contra Costa County residents over the age of sixty during the
1987 program year, and over 6.1 million home-delivered meals will be served
to approximately 55,000 Americans over the age of sixty during the same
year; and
WHEREAS dedicated volunteers and staff help seniors receive hot
nutritious meals each day which help to insure the continued well-being of
so many persons, as nutritious food is an essential ingredient to the
maintenance of life; and
WHEREAS community based home-delivered meals programs make
possible the joint use of public and private funds and resources to serve
older people and provide many other supportive services thus enabling older
persons to maintain themselves with maximum dignity and independence; and
WHEREAS the aged are revered members of our society;
NOW THEREFORE BE ' IT RESOLVED by the Board of Supervisors of
Contra Costa County that the week of May 11-17, 1987 is PROCLAIMED to be
California Senior Homebound Awareness Week, in affirmation of the value
these services provide to ensure the well-being of older Americans.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Contra
Costa County DETERMINES to make a special effort to visit homebound seniors
during this week in order to acknowledge and recognize their needs and
support their dignity and independence.
PASSED on May 5, 1987 by unanimous vote of the Board members
present.
I hereby certify that the foregoing is a true and correct copy of

aforesaid.
