Fanden Contra Costa May 19 , 1987 for Consideration on County DATE: .June 2, 1987 l SUBJECT: FUNDING SOURCE TO PERMANENTLY LIGHT CARQUINEZ AND BENICIA BRIDGES SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATION(S) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION RECOMMENDATION: That the County write to our State legislators urging them to include provision to dedicate a portion of any raised bridge tolls towards i.nst-all.ai.on of permanent J :iglltin,n, on the Carquinez and Benicia Bridges , and aminend any current legislation to include that dedication. BACKGROUND : The Golden Gate and Bay Bridges will be permanently lighted in honor of their fiftieth anniversaries . This request would be for dedication through legislation of 2 to 1C of any toll increase towards the permanent lighting of the two bridges as well . Discussion with CalTrans indicates anywhere from $30 ,000 to $100 ,000 could be raised based on current traffic and the lighting could be funded within two years . The lighting projects should be undertaken now as they will never get any cheaper . When the Golden Gate Bridge was built , lighting would have cost $90, 000 . Today ' s estimated cost is $1 , 000 ,000 . The Board ' s support of my suggestion , outlined in my letter to Assemblyman Campbell to ammend any pending legislation increasing the bridge tolls , will be an important first step in completing the glorious necklace of lights that our bridges trace across our Bay. Robert Campbell Assemblyman, Eleventh District 2901 MacDonald Avenue Richmond, CA 94804 Dear Bob: The other night I got to thinking about how the Carquinez and Benicia Bridges are being- treated like the poor sisters to their more famous siblings , the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges. Those two bridges will be lit with necklaces of permanent lights , the Carquinez and Benicia Bridges will stay plain and unlit. That shouldn' t happen. I'm writing to you to urge you to amend the legislation increasing the bridge tolls so that a very small amount from the increase, say 20 to 10 could be dedicated towards permanent lighting of those two bridges . Lighting the two bridges will not only be a thing of beauty, but will symbolize the strengthening links between the counties they connect.. I think it would be a wonderful, positive thing for government to do . I hope you will agree and will put the short-term toll dedication in the toll increase legislation.
