May 17 , 1987 Carquinez Bridge) Resolution No. 87/258
Day )
WHEREAS the Carquinez Bridge is celebrating its '
sixtieth year of operation; and
WHEREAS the Carquinez Bridge was opened May 21 , 1927 by
President Calvin Coolidge; and
WHEREAS little notice of the Carquinez Bridge opening
was given, due to the first trans-Atlantic flight in the
Spirit of Saint Louis by the aviator Charles Lindbergh; and
WHEREAS The Carquinez Bridge was the first bridge to
unite the continent from Canada to the North and Mexico to ,
the South; and
WHEREAS the Carquinez Bridge was an engineering marvel
in its ' time, employing cantilevered trapezoidal
construction; and
WHEREAS the Carquinez Bridge was privately built and
operated by Vallejo grocer Aven J. Hanford and San Francisco
wholesaler Oscar M. Klatt along with other investors known
as The American Toll Bridge Company and now is owned by the
State of California; and

WHEREAS the time has come to bestow proper honors on
the Carquinez Bridge and those who celebrate its ' sixtieth
birthday.-
NOW,
irthday;NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that Sunday, May 17 , 1987
be declared CARQUINEZ BRIDGE DAY in Contra Costa County.
PASSED AND ADOPTED on May 12 , 1987 , by the unanimous
vote of the Board members present.
I hereby certify that the foregoing is a true and
correct copy. of a resolution entered in the minutes of the
Board of S11ervisors on the date aforesaid.
