HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 04211987 - T.4 T.4 THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA Adopted this Order on April 21, 1987 by the following vote: AYES: Supervisors Powers, Fanden, Schroder, Torlakson, McPeak NOES: None ABSENT: None ABSTAIN: None ------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------- SUBJECT: Contra Costa County Health Promotion Policy Stuart McCullough, Assistant Health Services Director, introduced the presentation prepared for the Board by members of the communitywide Task Force on the Prevention of Alcohol/Drug Abuse and Violence and urged that at the conclusion of the presentation, the Board endorse the "Health Promotion Policy: Focus on Alcohol/Drug Abuse and Violence Prevention. " Mr. McCullough advised that in May, members of the Task Force will move across the county to ask City Councils and Boards of Education to take similar action. The following Task Force members participated in the presentation of the Health Promotion Policy: Jeanne Lopes, representing the schools Doris Harrison, Employee Counselor for Chevron Joe Golio, representing the Central Labor Council Missy Schroder, student representing Youth Educator Program Ron Stewart, County Superintendent of Schools Sherrin Bennett, Prevention Consultant Kirk Pinney, Rotary Club Queenie Newkirk, representing the community Kathy Tabor, Center of Community Development Stuart McCullough summarized the presentation and recommended that the Board take the following actions: 1. ADOPT the Contra Costa County Health Promotion Policy: Focus on Alcohol/Drug Abuse and Violence Prevention. 2. DELEGATE to Mental Health Services and the Task Force on the Prevention of Alcohol/Drug Abuse and Violence responsibility for developing a county-wide Action Plan for consideration by the Board. 3 . INSTRUCT staff to work with unions and employee organizations in disseminating alcohol/drug abuse and violence prevention information and resources to county employees. 4. REQUEST Mental Health Services to develop and provide training and information sessions for appropriate county staff/community leaders to enhance and/or develop skills relevant to alcohol/drug abuse and violence prevention. 5. ENCOURAGE the media to promote positive images as alternatives to alcohol/drug abuse and violence; and to send a letter of endorsement and commendation to KPIX for the KPIX sponsored Prevention Forum for Contra Costa County, "For Kids Sake. " 6. INSTRUCT the County Alcohol/Drug Abuse and Mental Health Divisions, with the Task Force on Alcohol/Drug Abuse and Violence Prevention, to work with the school districts in support of their efforts to best utilize new federal drug allocations and other prevention funds. Supervisor Schroder commented that it is important that the Cities, School Districts and the public realize that this is not a county program being foisted off on the communities, but is in fact a responsibility of the family and the community. Supervisor Powers urged the Task Force not to disband, but to continue to persevere, and to keep pushing to get people involved. Supervisor McPeak noted that the Contra Costa Health Coalition had endorsed the Policy in March. She commented that the Board was pleased at the progress made in this County and that she believed Contra Costa to be the only County with a prevention unit. IT IS BY THE BOARD ORDERED THAT the six recommendations listed above are APPROVED. Stuart McCullough, on behalf of the Task Force, thanked the Board for its actions and support.
