REASONS FOR RECOMMENDATION/BACKGROUND
On February 3, 1987, the Board of Supervisors referred a letter from Mr. E. C. Sanford, 293
MacGregor Road, Pleasant Hill , CA 94523, regarding the intersection of Golf Club Road and
Paso Nogal to me for investigation and report.
The intersection of Golf Club Road and Paso Nogal is a "T" intersection with Golf Club Road
running in an east-west direction and Paso Nogal is going south and connects to the east
side of Golf Club Road by a short radius curve. This curve is posted with curve warning
and 20 MPH advisory speed and other warning signs. The traffic volume through this
intersection is approximately 8,000 vehicles per day and the major traffic flow is
westbound from Golf Club Road around the curve to southbound on Paso Nogal and vise versa.
The easterly leg of Golf Club Road provides access to the Contra Costa Golf and Country
Club and to several residential units.
There has been only one reported accident in 1984, none in 1985, two in 1986, and one so
far in 1987 at this intersection. Several years ago, the County approved a subdivision to
the southwest corner of this intersection. The Developer constructed curb and widened the
pavement along the frontage of this subdivision, according to the future plans of the
intersection. This road widening does not quite fit the existing road because, the
existing road grade is to be lowered and the radius of the curve increased to provide a
more comfortable road alignment and to increase traffic safety through the curve.
Subsequently, the County approved another subdivision just next to the one describe above.
This developer was required to install a guard rail at the intersection to provide better
delineation for motorists around the curve.
