SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATION(S) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDATION
Approve the attached Resolution proclaiming April, 1987 as
Earthquake Preparedness Month.
BACKGROUND
In recent months, California has been experiencing
increasing seismic activity with quakes occurring in Palm-
kprings, Coalinga and as close as Oakland in the Bay Area.
In Contra Costa, five known active faultlines extend
through the county, raising much concern about the
potential for severe loss of life and damage to property in
the event of a major earthquake. To address this concern,
Governor Deukmejian has designated the entire month of
April for Earthquake Preparedness to educate Californians
about earthquake risks in the state and to encourage them
to prepare themselves and their family.
The State Office of Emergency Services, Southern California
Earthquake Preparedness Project and the Bay Area Regional
Earthquake Preparedness Project have organized and are
coordinating a statewide Earthquake Preparedness Campaign
to encourage the public to take action to make their homes,
workplaces, schools and neighborhoods damage resistant and
earthquake prepared.
In Contra Costa, a countywide earthquake symposium is
scheduled for Friday, April 10th, at the Walnut Creek Civic
Arts Theatre to educate the community on being prepared for
a major earthquake.
