Maxfield, Fire Chief Contra Costa DATE: March 4 , 1987 Cour SUBJECT: Acceptance of Restricted Donation SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATION(S) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION I . RECOMMENDED ACTION: a. Accept an $8,000 donation from the -Soroptimist International of Walnut Creek for the purpose of purchasing a "Hazard House on Wheels" mobile trailer to be used in the Contra Costa County Consolidated Fire District' s .public education program in the Fire Prevention Bureau. b. Approve related appropriation and revenue adjustments. II . FINANCIAL IMPACT: Thisrestricted donation is from an outside funding source, i.e: , the Soroptimist International of Walnut Creek. Since it represents additional revenue not anticipated in the District' s budget, appro- priation and revenue adjustments must also be processed. III . REASONS FOR RECOMMENDATION/BACKGROUND: For a number of years, the Consolidated Fire District conducted a public awareness fire safety program at its Hazard . ,- . House primarily for the school children of the community. The program lasted for approximately a two-week period each October, and it was very effective and well .received. However, because of the deteriorating condition of Hazard House over the years and resulting safety concerns in conjunction with cost considerations, the program was discontinued in the Fall of 1986. Also, due . to budget constraints in the public school system, the great majority of children visiting Hazard House were .from..private schools In an effort to reach more children, a new program. was developed. This program consists of two assembly-type presentations available to each school on an invitational basis, thereby exposing many more children (especially public school children) to the benefits of fire safety education. Because of . limited resources and staff, only basic fire survival techniques are discussed. An additional mobile . trailer--the Hazard House on Wheels--would provide students with much needed new fire safety information as well as a visual, hands-on Medium for reinforcing the training. Moreover, the District believes public fire safety education must be an ongoing, year-round activity CONTINUED ON ATTACHMENT: YES SIGNATURE: \ RECOMMENDATION OF COUNTY ADMINISTRATOR RECOMMENDATION OF BOARD COMMITTEE APPROVE OTHER SIGNATURE(S) ACTION OF BOARD ON MAR 17 1.981 APPROVED AS RECOMMENDED OTHER VOTE OF SUPERVISORS X UNANIMOUS (ABSENT I ) I HEREBY CERTIFY THAT THIS IS A TRUE AYES: NOES: AND CORRECT COPY OF AN ACTION TAKEN ABSENT: ABSTAIN: AND ENTERED ON THE MINUTES OF THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS ON THE DATE SHOWN. The "Hazard House on Wheels' mobile trailer is designed to be trans- ported to schools, county fairs, safety fairs, shopping malls and any other activities involving large community participation to promote fire safety. The trailer will be divided into two sections: the larger section will display approximately 14 different life survival techniques and fire safety messages; the smaller section will demon- strate the effectiveness of residential fire sprinkler systems. It is anticipated at least 40,000 children and adults per year will view the displays in the trailer at schools and civic functions.
