HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 06031986 - 1.36 1-036 THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA Adopted this Order on June 3 , 1986 by the following vote: AYES: Supervisors Fanden, Schroder , McPeak, Torlakson and Powers NOES: None ABSENT: None ABSTAIN: None SUBJECT: DECLARING JUNE 1986 AS DROWNING PREVENTION MONTH WHEREAS , California leads the nation in drowning accidents with deaths among young children rising each year; and WHEREAS , drowning is the leading cause of accidental deaths among California children under five years of age , accounting for 112 deaths in 1984; and WHEREAS , Contra Costa County is the fourth leading county in the state experiencing accidental drowning deaths ; and WHEREAS , accidents not causing death can result in irreversible brain damage which constitutes a significant factor in new admissions to California' s state hospitals for the developmentally disabled; and WHEREAS , drowning and near-drowning accidents are 100% . preventable ; and WHEREAS , because three-fourths of the drowning accidents occur during the months of April through September, the Department of Developmental Services is coordinating a public awareness campaign to help prevent these tragic accidents ; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County does hereby proclaim the month of June 1986 as Drowning Prevention Month in Contra Costa County.
