HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 05201986 - X.13 J l THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA Adopted this Order on May 20, 1986 , by the following vote: AYES: Supervisors Fanden, Schroder, McPeak, Torlakson, Powers NOES: None ABSENT: None ABSTAIN: None -------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------- SUBJECT: Possible Contamination of Drinking Water Supervisor Fanden referred to an article in the Tribune Newspaper, dated May 19 , 1986, advising of studies undertaken at 12 regional military installations that indicate the dumping of toxic wastes on the sites. She noted that the newspaper article targets the U. S. Naval Weapons Station at Concord as having at least 12 poisonous sites containing heavy metals, arsenic, and selenium. She expressed concern that these toxic wastes may be contaminating the water in the Contra Costa Water District' s channel, thereby threatening the health of the District' s subscribers. Supervisor Fanden recommended that the Health Services Director be authorized to investigate the possibility of contamination of the Water District' s channel at the Concord Naval Weapons installation. Board members concurred that the matter needs prompt investigation. The County Administrator advised that local juris- dictions have no authority to conduct investigations at military installations. THEREFORE IT IS BY THE BOARD ORDERED that the County Administrator, Health Services Director, and County counsel are REQUESTED to report to the Board as soon as possible on the investi- gative process to be followed in assessing the possibility of toxic materials on-site at the Concord Naval Weapons Station contaminating the Water District' s channel. IT IS FURTHER ORDERED that the Director of Community Development is REQUESTED to write to the Director of the Contra Costa Water District inquiring of their concern in this area. f hereby certify thai this is a true and correct copy of an action taken and entered on the minutes of the Board of Supervisor,on the date shown.
