III. REASONS FOR RECOMMENDATIONS/BACKGROUND: Contra Costa County leads the state in per capita toxic waste production. Community concern about toxic materials and environmental pollution is rising dra- matically. Environmental health education is one of the most pressing public health needs in Contra Costa County. This program will work with local government, health specialists, key community groups, and local industry to develop community education materials in English and Spanish. The materials will be utilized as part of a public education campaign aimed at the general population, with particular emphasis on high risk populations, including industrial workers, the elderly, and children. The goal of the program is to reduce health impacts on environmental threats through increased knowledge about risks , prevention, and protection strategies, and reduction of unnecessarily high levels of concern which potentially result in illness.
