SUBJECT: -
Legislation: AB 3313
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATION(S) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDATION:
Adopt a position of support for AB 3313 (Baker) which would
increase the number of Superior Court Judges for Contra Costa
County from 15 to 18.
BACKGROUND:
As a part of the Board of Supervisors' 1986 Legislative Program,
the Board agreed to sponsor legislation which would increase the
number of Superior Court Judges from 15 to 16 effective
January 1, 1987, and from 16 to 18 upon adoption of a specified
Resolution by the Board of Supervisors effective at some point in
the future.
In response to this request, Assemblyman Baker has introduced
AB 3313 . This bill increases the number of Judges from 15 to 16
effective January 1, 1987 . It also includes language allowing
the Board of Supervisors to adopt a Resolution finding that there
are sufficient funds for two additional Judges and thereby
increases the number of Superior Court Judges from 16 to 18 . The
Resolution must, however, be adopted not later than June 30,
1990.
In view of the fact that this is Board-sponsored legislation, it
is appropriate for the Board to go on record formally in support
of AB 3313 .
