HEALTH SERVICES VOLUNTEER PROGRAM COORDINATOR
DEFINITION:
Under general direction to assist in planning, organizing, coordinating
and monitoring the Health Services Department's Volunteer Program; to assign and
supervise the work of volunteer staff; to coordinate public relations; and to
do related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
This single position class is responsible for coordinating the daily
activities of the Health Services Department's Volunteer Program. It is dis-
tinguished from the class of Volunteer Program Coordinator in that the latter
is located in the Social Service Department and incumbents coordinate volunteer
program activities in assigned geographic areas.
TYPICAL TASKS:
Evaluates and prioritizes volunteer service needs; recruits, interviews,
selects, orients and provides training for volunteers; coordinates the activities
of the Contra Costa County Health Services Auxiliary in compliance with its
by-laws and articles of incorporation; supervises and evaluates the performance
of volunteers; coordinates media coverage of events and activities within the
Health Services Department to enhance its public image; develops community
support for volunteer services through press releases, newsletters and direct
contact with community groups; solicits and accepts donations from private
industry; acts as liaison between the Auxiliary, Health Services Department
Administration and staff; develops job descriptions for each volunteer service
area; coordinates the acquisition and distribution of volunteer uniforms;
arranges for the public recognition of volunteers; files appropriate federal ,
State, local and District tax forms to protect the non-profit status of the
Auxiliary; serves on volunteer committees; attends conferences, luncheons, and
volunteer award ceremonies; writes reports, press releases, articles and
announcements.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Possession of a Baccalaureate Degree from an accredited
college or uni—versity with a major in psychology, sociology, volunteer
administration, hospital administration, business administration, public
administration, or a closely related field.
Fulltime Experience or its Equivalent: Either one year of experience
coordinating an /or supervising a volunteer services program in a health services
setting or two years of experience as a volunteer in a health services setting.
Substitution of Experience for Education: Additional qualifying
experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year
basis up to a maximum of four years. One additional year of qualifying
experience may be substituted for the required academic major.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of the techniques and principles of volunteer programs;

knowledge of tax laws applicable to a nonprofit, incorporated organization;
knowledge of organization and administration of a hospital or health services
agency; ability to plan and direct the work of volunteers; ability to establish
good cooperative working relationships with community groups and representatives;
ability to speak before the public; ability to prepare clear and concise reports,
press releases, letters and memoranda.
